Boston Celtics Rumors: Roster Moves Continue With Impending Addition of Championship Piece
In the latest Boston Celtics rumors, there is a new face heading to Beantown this summer. According to several reports, the roster will soon welcome a one-time NBA champion. Boston is looking to improve its frontline after losing some key players from last season.
The player set to join the Celtics is Aron Baynes. ESPN reported that both sides agreed to a one-year deal that is going to earn the center over $4.3 million.
For the majority of Baynes' career, he was coming off the bench. However, in Boston, he might be given a bigger role. Yahoo! Sports suggested that he can be the Celtics' starting center for the 2017-18 NBA season. The change will allow the veteran Al Horford to spend more time at the power forward position. But being the backup of Horford remains a possibility for the 30-year-old from New Zealand.
Last season, Baynes played his second year with the Detroit Pistons. He was the second-stringer at center with Andre Drummond taking the starting duties. In 75 games (two starts) for Detroit, Baynes averaged 4.9 points and 4.4 rebounds per contest.
Baynes' best outing in the NBA was during the 2014-15 season. He was then with the San Antonio Spurs who at that time were coming off a successful championship bid. The ex-Washington State Cougars won a title with San Antonio in 2014.
Boston has had a busy offseason so far. The Celtics landed one of the most coveted free agents this year in Gordon Hayward. Unfortunately, his acquisition required sacrifices. They already parted ways with Avery Bradley (traded to the Pistons), Amir Johnson (signed with the Philadelphia 76ers), and Kelly Olynyk (joined the Miami Heat). All three had significant contributions to the success the franchise achieved in the past few campaigns.
