Logitech Threatens Razer as Leading High-End Gaming Peripheral Brand after Acquiring ASTRO Gaming

In a surprising move last Tuesday, July 11, Logitech agreed to acquire ASTRO Gaming, a leading console gaming brand with a history of producing award-winning headsets for professional gamers and enthusiasts. With the two leading names in gaming peripherals, will this be a reason for Razer to be threatened?

"ASTRO is the leading player for premium console headsets and is the preferred headset for console eSports athletes," Logitech G vice president and general manager Ujesh Desai said as posted on Logitech Press Release page. "It's a perfect complement to Logitech G's focus on PC gaming and we couldn't be more excited; we love the team, the brand and the products. Together, we want to make game play even more fun for gamers everywhere."

Logitech is expected to complete the acquisition of ASTRO Gaming for $85 million in early August. With the acquisition of ASTRO Gaming, Logitech is expected to grow approximately two points in FY 2018. With Logitech's recent expansion in terms of gaming peripherals, will this be enough reason for top gamers all around the world to leave Razer and endorse Logitech?

Undoubtedly, Razer is the top choice of leading gamers. However, with its exorbitant price, newbies to average gamers cannot afford to use it in some low-level gaming competitions.

In addition, Razer is not just about gaming controllers, paraphernalia and peripherals but also caters total PC gaming package such as laptops, tablet computer, wearable's and Open Source Virtual Reality. Plus, Razer has been expanding recently, acquiring THX and Nextbit and partnering with NZXT and Lenovo.

As posted by Quartz Media, the growth of Razer will depend on professional video gaming, or eSports. But while eSports is growing in numbers, it is still nowhere near the size of the global gaming population.

This affects the stature of Razer as being the leader when it comes to high-end gaming peripherals. Thus, Logitech's acquisition of ASTRO Gaming proves a high-level move to retain the status as the leading producer of gaming paraphernalia and peripherals for professional gamers and enthusiasts.
