Hamilton equaled the tally of Scot Jim Clark and Frenchman Alain Prost with his fourth home win in a row to add to his first win for McLaren in 2008. Here are the details.

Hamilton To Take Schumacher Crown With British Grand Prix Pole

Hamilton's victory left him one point behind Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel. The German blew out a front-left while in third with two laps to go, dropping to seventh. The same problem had hit Vettel's team-mate, Kimi Raikkonen, the lap before, costing the Finn an almost certain second place, according to Express.

Hamilton's team-mate Valtteri Bottas to a Mercedes one-two. Raikkonen recovered to finish third. Following the podiums celebrations, Hamilton went down to see the crowd, surfing on their outstretched hands and high-fiving as he ran past the adoring throng.

He said: "The support has been incredible this weekend. I am so proud I could do this for you all. Now the plan is to win the championship."

However, while the German master Schumacher remained at his Geneva home recuperating from a horror skiing accident while skiing in French Alps in 2013, Hamilton came within an ace of matching and beating Schumacher's long-held record for pole positions.

However, his family is reluctant to release additional information on his condition. His agent Sabine Kehm said in December 2016: "Michael's health is not a public issue, and so we will continue to make no comment in that regard".
