Kobe Bryant Divorce: The Real Reason Lakers Star Called Off Divorce With Wife Vanessa
Vanessa Bryant, NBA star Kobe Bryant's wife, announced on her Instagram account that she and Kobe called off their divorce proceedings and will stay married.
"We are pleased to announce that we have reconciled," said Vanessa on social media. "Our divorce action will be dismissed. We are looking forward to our future together. "
We can all feel good about the married couple rediscovering their love and finding what bought them together in the first place. Yet, there is something bigger to this story. There is something that many people are not talking about concerning the Bryant divorce.
Back in 2003 when Bryant was caught cheating on his wife, his wife Vanessa stayed with him. In a move that many people questioned, she chose to stay by his side. Her present was a $4 million ring to show her that he was sorry.
Let's fast forward to 2011 when Vanessa filed for divorce from the NBA All-Star. The filing cited irreconcilable differences and sought joint custody for their two daughters. Before the ink ever dried on the divorce paper, Kobe was on the job to win her back. You may ask "Why Kobe Bryant? As rich and famous as you are, why do you care if you get divorced?" Well ...
Kobe and Vanessa never signed a pre-nuptial agreement so in addition to having to pay child support for their daughters, Kobe would have to pay spousal support. In California, the bread winning spouse is expected to pay spousal support for half the length of the marriage. The couple was married in 2001 which means the marriage ran for over 10 years so the rules change. A judge can decree that a marriage over 10 years is longterm and the higher spouse may pay support ... INDEFINTELY.
But how much spousal support you ask? According to Forbes, Bryant's annual income is located somewhere around $53.2 million. Based on that information and the fact that Kobe would have 50/50 custody, his child support would be about $365,000. His spousal support would in the neighborhood of $1 million. So monthly, Kobe Bryant would pay $1.36 million in child and spousal payments a month for his kids and ex-wife.
This is where the term "It's cheaper to keep her" applies.
Not only would Vanessa Bryant receive the money according to California attorney Andrew Botros but everything that Kobe accumulated during the duration of marriage is split down the middle and considered community property. Houses, cars, jewelry is all split 50/50 down the middle and distributed evenly between the two of them. It was reported earlier that Mrs. Bryant was set to get all three of their houses in the supposed divorce already. So the net value of the divorce would have skyrocketed if any of that property was sold.
Needless to say, all you need is love but cash rules the world and Kobe knows that. The marriage is back on and they could live happily ever after but just remember ... it's not always as simple as love.
