Chelsea Transfer Rumors: Fernando Torres Out, Bayern Munich Striker Mario Gomez In?
Chelsea have been linked by talkSPORT with high-profile, out-of-favor, striker Mario Gomez. The London club are believed to be running out of patience with £50-million Fernando Torres. A bid of £36-million is considered to be necessary to tempt Bayern into selling.
Gomez scored an impressive 41 goals in 52 appearances last season but has only managed 8 in 17 this term. Much of the reduced goal-return can be attributed to the arrival of Croatian striker Mario Mandzukic to the club. With Munich manager Jupp Heyncks preferring to play only one striker, the German has increasingly found himself on the bench with the manager preferring to play Mandzukic in the role.
Chelsea are looking to capitalize on these recent developments by ridding themselves of underperforming Torres. While Torres has scored 15 goals this season, he looks well off the player he was at Liverpool. The striker has been severely criticized by the media as a reaction to the exorbitant fee Chelsea paid for him in January 2011.
While the new arrivals in the summer are likely to be numerous, Chelsea will also be saying goodbye to some players, one of whom will be Yossi Benayoun.
Benayoun Set to Depart Chelsea
Yossi Benayoun will be leaving Chelsea this summer, his agent confirms.
"The player is concentrating on this season and he is committed at Chelsea," Benayoun's agent Ronen Katsav told Russian paper Izvestia. "He will be released at the end of the season and, being a good player, it is normal that there is interest from several clubs. Before the expiry of his contract we will consider all offers," he added.
The Israel international was bought from Liverpool by manager Carlo Ancelotti in July 2010. He has found appearances hard to come by, even spending the beginning of the season on loan to West Ham. The player is reported to be favoring a move to the Russian Premier League with Lokomotiv Moscow and Rubin Kazan both interested. He has scored one goal in 16 appearances for the Stamford Bridge club.
