The Rockets are coming off a blowout victory over the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday night. All five Houston starters scored in double figures, including a team-high 19 from forward Donatas Motiejunas. Guard James Harden was right behind him with 18 points, while point guard Jeremy Lin added six assists.
"We were moving the ball, sharing the ball," Jeremy Lin told NBA.com. "You could look across (the statistics) and see we had great distribution among the scoring. That's usually a great sign of transition buckets, as well as sharing the ball offensively."
Thanks to that victory, the Rockets still sit in seventh place in the Western Conference, two games ahead of the Utah Jazz. On paper, they should continue their winning ways tonight against a Timberwolves squad that is just 22-40 on the season.
However, Houston has struggled against Minnesota in recent games. According to the Rockets' game notes, Houston has lost four of its last five to the Timberwolves, including a 13-point defeat on January 19.
The Associated Press noted that Minnesota had just nine healthy players in that January win, including forwards Chris Johnson and Mickael Gelabale, who were signed the morning of the game. Things got so bad for the Rockets that coach Kevin McHale benched Jeremy Lin at the start of the second half in favor of fellow guard Patrick Beverley. However, the plan backfired when the latter guard picked up two early fouls and was sent back to the bench.
The Timberwolves signed the aforementioned players because they have been struggling with injuries all season long. In fact, several of Minnesota's key contributors are expected to miss Friday night's contest with various ailments. Per the team's game notes, guard Brandon Roy and forward Chase Budinger have been out since November with knee injuries, while forward Kevin Love has missed 33 games after undergoing hand surgery. In addition, center Nikola Pekovic is doubtful for Saturday's contest after suffering an abdominal strain against the Los Angeles Lakers last month.
In the other matchup this season, Houston defeated Minnesota by three on December 26. Harden led the Rockets in that contest with 30 points, 17 of which came in the fourth quarter. Center Omer Asik, meanwhile, was just a point short of a double-double, and Jeremy Lin added eight points but also committed seven turnovers.
