Before you watch the live stream of the Yankees versus the Red Sox on MLB opening day, here is a preview of Monday's contest.

While both of these teams have been perennial contenders for years, each could be in for a tough ride this season.

New York has lost many key faces from last year's squad. Catcher Russell Martin and outfielder Nick Swisher each left the Yankees in free agency, while many of the other key contributors have gone down with injuries.

Per SI.com, third baseman Alex Rodriguez will likely be out until at least the All-Star break after undergoing hip surgery in January. Meanwhile, outfielder Curtis Granderson broke his forearm during spring training, and first baseman Mark Teixeira strained his wrist while playing for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic. Each could be out for a month or more.

Plus, as AOL Sporting News notes, shortstop Derek Jeter will begin the season the disabled list as he recovers from a serious ankle injury suffered during last year's playoffs. Throw in pitcher Phil Hughes' bulging disk, and the Yankees have more talent on their D.L. for MLB Opening Day than some teams may have on their entire rosters.

Still, New York may be able to survive this early stretch with the help of its pitching staff. As NJ.com notes, this remains one of the strengths of the team, especially if C.C. Sabathia returns to form from last season. The Yankees will also see the return of closer Mariano Rivera after the future Hall-of-Famer missed much of last season with a torn ACL and meniscus in his right knee.

As the Associated Press notes, the Red Sox enter MLB Opening Day in the middle of a transition as well. Boston finished in last place in the division last season and traded away many of its expensive underachievers. Instead, the team will rely more on young future stars, like 2011 first round pick Jackie Bradley, Jr.

According to the Boston Globe, Bradley will start in left field on Monday despite playing just 138 games in the minor leagues. He was not expected to make the team's roster so soon but took advantage of injuries to starters David Ortiz and Stephen Drew. Bradley was one of the team's best offensive weapons in spring training, hitting .419 with 12 RBIs.

Sabathia gets the start for the Yankees on MLB Opening Day, while the Red Sox will send Jon Lester to the mound. Per Reuters, Sabathia went 15-6 last season with a 3.38 ERA, while Lester was just 9-14 with a 4.82 ERA.
