Pete Mesko Arrested: Cornell Wrestler Charged With Rape After Victim’s Friend Took Picture Of Him After Incident
A wrestler from Cornell University was charged with rape after a female student caught him having sex with her friend while she was sleeping on Saturday according to The Daily Mail.
The two women have not been named in the case but the alleged male student is Pete Mesko, 22, a senior at the Ivy League school. He was charged with first degree rape and was released on $5,000 bail. He is scheduled to be in court today.
According to court papers published by local newspaper the Ithaca Journal, the two women went to a Collegetown, N.Y. bar with friends on Friday night at 11 p.m. and went back to a friend's house and fell asleep at about 1 a.m. The alleged victim told police that she only had two beers, a shot of tequila and a whisky and coke.
The friend of the victim was awakened by noise about a half-hour after arriving at the house by people who were invited to the house to play drinking games. She asked them to quiet down and went back to sleep. She did notice that some wrestlers from the Cornell team were in attendance at the after-party.
At about 4:45 a.m., the victim woke up to the sensation of being raped, according to court papers.
"I woke up confused and uncomfortable and said 'I don't like that, stop,'" the victim told police.
Her cries were heard by her friend who came to her aid and fought Mesko off. While helping her friend, the victim's friend recognized the alleged assailant as a Cornell wrestler. After the two fled the room where reported attack took place, the friend of the victim went back to the room to take photos of the victim as he lay asleep.
"I quickly took two pictures of him, he said aloud 'no' when he recognized that I had taken them," the women recalled.
Mesko tried to get into the room the two women were staying in after the attack but he was unable to get in.
"He tries to push the door twice and was twisting the door knob," the victim recalled. "I said 'it's occupied' abs then we heard his footsteps go away from the door."
About 30 minutes later, the two left the house and looked up Mesko on the Cornell wrestling site. The victim contacted Cornell's Gannett Health Center, who sent her to the emergency room to have a rape exam done.
Both Ithaca and Cornell police conducted interviews with both women and others and arrested Mesko on Tuesday. Cornell officials said they could not comment on an ongoing legal issue but dean of students Kent Hubbell released a statement on the school's website.
"The arrest this week of a Cornell student charged with raping a fellow student has shocked our community," said Hubbell.
There has been no word on whether Mesko has been released from the wrestling team at Cornell. The Cornell wrestling team has won five Ivy League wrestling titles in a row and has had a national champion in a weight class every year since 2008.
