Before you watch the live stream online of Jeremy Lin's Houston Rockets versus the Memphis Grizzlies, here is a preview of Friday's contest.
Houston is coming off a last-second victory over the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday night. Guard James Harden attempted a three in a tie game as time expired, but the ball bounced off the rim. However, the referees called goaltending against Phoenix center Jermaine O'Neal, counting the basketball and giving the Rockets a playoff-clinching win.
Harden had a team-high 33 points in that contest, 13 of which came on free throws. Meanwhile, point guard Jeremy Lin added 15 points, while center Omer Asik had a team-high 22 rebounds. As the Associated Press notes, the Rockets clinched a playoff spot later that evening when the Utah Jazz lost to Oklahoma City.
As the Houston Chronicle notes, Jeremy Lin was actually the one who texted his teammates to let them know that they had officially clinched a playoff spot. The team then got together to celebrate their somewhat surprising success.
"We definitely didn't think we'd be here coming into training camp -- seventh seed with a chance of getting the sixth, and in the Western Conference, too," Jeremy Lin told the paper. "I was hoping we'd be here, but if I were to be realistic, I [thought] we would be fighting for the eighth spot, not the sixth. Or us to be fighting for the sixth spot, I'm happy about that."
The Rockets clinched this playoff berth despite the absence of two key contributors: forwards Chandler Parsons and Carlos Delfino. The former returned to practice on Thursday after missing three games with an injured calf. However, he is still questionable for Friday's contest, per the Houston Chronicle. The same paper reports that Delfino is expected to return after missing three straight games with the flu.
As NBA.com notes, Friday's matchup could be a playoff preview for the Rockets. If Houston can catch the Golden State Warriors and clinch the sixth seed in the Western Conference, Houston would likely avoid taking on favorites San Antonio or Oklahoma City in the first round. Instead, the Rockets could end up facing the Grizzlies.
Those Grizzlies have already beaten the Rockets twice in three games this season. The most recent matchup came last month, when Memphis' top-ranked scoring defense held Houston's offense to just 94 points. Both Jeremy Lin and Harden were held under 10 points in the contest, shooting a combined 6-of-18 from the field. Meanwhile, center Marc Gasol and forward Zach Randolph each had a team-high 21 points for Memphis.
