Before you watch the live stream online of Jeremy Lin's Houston Rockets versus the Oklahoma City Thunder, here is a preview of Sunday's Game 1 matchup.
Jeremy Lin and the Houston Rockets lost out on the No. 7 seed when they fell to the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday night. Houston blew a late lead but tied the game at the buzzer on a three-point shot from forward Chandler Parsons. Parsons then made one of two free throws early in the extra session to give Houston back the lead, but Lakers' forward Pau Gasol made a two-pointer with 2:26 left to give Los Angeles the lead for good.
The Thunder, meanwhile, clinched the top seed in the Western Conference last Monday after a victory over the Sacramento Kings. Oklahoma City finished the season 60-22, two games ahead of No. 2 seed San Antonio. The squad has gotten it done with both offense and defense, ranking third in the NBA in points per game and ninth in scoring defense.
On paper, the Thunder should cruise to a relatively easy victory over the Rockets. As the Houston Chronicle notes, only five times in NBA history has a No. 8 seed beaten a No. 1 seed in a playoff series. However, this has happened in each of the past two seasons. The Memphis Grizzlies beat the Spurs in 2011, and the Philadelphia 76ers beat the Chicago Bulls in 2012. Of course, that Bulls squad suffered a huge blow when star guard Derrick Rose injured his knee in Game 1 of that series.
As Yahoo Sports notes, Jeremy Lin could end up being the difference in this series. During the first two contests between the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Houston Rockets this season, the point guard scored only a total of 13 points, none of which came from three-point shots. The Rockets lost those two games by a combined 52 points. But, during the third matchup in this season's series, Jeremy Lin scored 29 points on 12-of-22 shooting in a 122-119 Rockets victory.
This series will mark a reunion for Rockets guard James Harden, who was traded from Oklahoma City just before the start of the regular season. The former Sixth Man of the Year finished fifth in the NBA in scoring, averaging 25.9 points per game. Still, the Thunder boast two of the league's top six scorers in forward Kevin Durant (second in the NBA with 28.1 ppg) and guard Russell Westbrook (sixth with 23.2 ppg).
These could pose a challenge for a Rockets team that finished the season 28th out of 30 teams in scoring defense. Indeed, Oklahoma City scored at least 119 points in all three of its matchups with Houston this season.
