Perhaps the biggest story of the first round of the NFL Draft 2013 was who was not selected. As Associated Press notes, neither quarterback Geno Smith nor linebacker Manti Te'o were chosen during Thursday's proceedings.
Smith was the consensus top quarterback in this year's draft, but the teams in the top 10 all chose to fill other needs. The Buffalo Bills did trade out of their No. 8 spot, fueling speculation that they would take the West Virginia alum. But instead, the Bills took a chance on EJ Manuel from Florida State, who most had pegged as a Day Two selection.
Thus, Geno Smith spent the first day of the NFL Draft 2013 in Radio City Music Hall, waiting for his name to be called. He was likely hoping that a team at the bottom of the second round would trade back into the first to select him, but that was not the case.
ESPN originally reported that Smith would spend Day 2 of the draft at home with his family, where he would not have to face the embarrassment of sitting alone in the green room, waiting to be selected. Some, including Kareem Copeland of NFL.com, were already wondering if this behavior, along with the quarterback's refusal to do interviews, would cause Smith to slide even further. However, Adam Schefter of ESPN reported early Friday that Smith will indeed stay in New York for Friday's rounds.
Te'o, meanwhile, likely fell to Day 2 of the NFL Draft 2013 after struggling in the NCAA national championship game versus Alabama. This was followed by an embarrassing scandal, when Deadspin revealed that Te'o's supposedly-dead girlfriend had never existed in the first place. The linebacker was evidently the victim of a catfishing scam.
Smith and possibly Te'o will likely hear their names called early on Day 2. The second and third rounds will also probably feature a plethora of skill position players, since few of them came off the board in round one. As the Detroit Free-Press notes, the first seven picks in the NFL Draft 2013 were linemen, and Manuel was the first and only quarterback selected.
Per ESPN Stats and Info, just four skill players were taken in the first round, the fewest since 1975. It was also the first time since 1963 that no running backs went in the first. Alabama alum Eddie Lacy is the top-rated back on most boards and could hear his name called early on Friday evening.
