Barcelona Transfer News: Neymar, Pepe Reina, David Luiz, Vincent Kompany To Join Catalans? David Villa And Cristian Tello Off To Premier League?
While Real Madrid appear to be on the cusp of a major overhaul, Barcelona seem to have a busy summer ahead of themselves, as well. A great deal of transfer speculation has arisen in recent weeks, prompting suggestions that both clubs will try to up the ante for a run at three titles next season.
Barcelona failed to meet their own high expectations this season by winning just La Liga, and falling short in the semi-finals of Copa del Rey and Champions League. The Catalans are expected to make some notable additions this summer with several prominent players linked to Camp Nou over the past few months.
The biggest name is undoubtedly Neymar. There has been a great deal of hype surrounding the Brazilian forward, and with the 2014 World Cup looming, it is assumed that he will need to play with elite club players and in a highly competitive league to showcase his abilities, and prepare him for the spotlight of the most prestigious tournament in team sports.
Neymar might be the ideal player for Barcelona. He would team up with Lionel Messi for a scoring tandem that might garner the most attention since the Napoli squad of the late 1980s that featured Diego Maradona and Careca. There has already been discussions of a €10 million down payment having already been paid.
Talk Sport reported in April that Neymar thanked Barcelona for their attention, prompting rumblings that his signing is imminent. He is expected to leave Santos for about £32 million according to the Daily Telegraph. Real Madrid are also serious contenders for his services.
Adding Neymar won't be much of a problem if reports are accurate that David Villa and Cristian Tello are headed to the Premier League. Villa had previously been linked to Arsenal, but Tottenham might make a move for the forward, according to Talk Sport and Daily Star. Liverpool are pursuing Tello in perhaps a swap for goalkeeper Pepe Reina, according to Daily Mirror. Tello has also reportedly drawn interest from AC Milan, while Victor Valdez has been linked to Anzhi Makhachkala.
Barcelona will likely bolster their backline with at least one new player. Two players linked to a Camp Nou arrivals are David Luiz of Chelsea and Vincent Kompany of Manchester City. Neither Chelsea nor City are expected to let their star defenders leave without a steep price. The Telegraph, Daily Mail, and Metro have all linked Kompany to Barcelona, but no publication has reported on his valuation. The Belgian star has been a key component of City's success in recent years, and it seems rather implausible that they would let him go without a top replacement.
Luiz's situation might be a little different. Brazilian players often prefer La Liga as their European league of choice, and Luiz would perhaps encourage a move to Barcelona where he can play with Dani Alves and perhaps Neymar. Daily Mail recently reported that Chelsea are seeking an astounding £40 million from Barcelona for the center back, who would replace Carles Puyol.
