Before you watch a free live online stream of Rafael Nadal versus Stan Wawrinka, here is a preview of the 2013 French Open quarterfinal.
The third-seeded Nadal advanced to the 2013 French Open quarterfinals thanks to a 6-4, 6-1, 6-3 victory over Kei Nishikori on Monday. The win took place on his 27th birthday, and he received a giant birthday cake on the court complete with tennis balls and rackets.
"If you told me two days ago, I would play like this today I would say give me the paper, I will sign it," Nadal said, per SI.com.
However, Nadal has struggled in the earlier stages of this tournament, which he usually dominates. As ESPN notes, Nadal has fallen behind early in each of his French Open 2013 matches. In both the first and second rounds, he lost the first set, while he needed a tie breaker to avoid a similar fate in the third round. During Monday's match with Nishikori, Nadal did not drop a set, but he lost each of the first five points that lasted 10 strokes or longer.
Earlier in the 2013 French Open, Nadal lashed out at tournament organizers for their scheduling in the midst of rain delays. The Spaniard ended up playing his second and third round matches on consecutive days, while his third-round opponent, Fabio Fognini, finished his previous match the day before. Per AP, Nadal felt that organizers should have done more to ensure that both of their matches concluded on the same day, since they would be facing each other in the next round.
If Nadal wins this match, he would likely face familiar rival Novak Djokovic in the French Open semifinals. Djokovic plays Tommy Haas in the other quarterfinal match on Wednesday. Per Associated Press, a win in the 2013 French Open would make Nadal the first man ever to win eight championships in one Grand Slam event.
Wawrinka, meanwhile, advanced to the 2013 French Open quarterfinals in a five set win over Richard Gasquet. The Switzerland native dropped the first two sets only to come back and win the next three.
"It was a crazy match," Wawrinka told AP. "Richard forced me to play my best tennis and I played at my best level. There was such an atmosphere that it felt like a Davis Cup tie. I don't know how I got away at the end."
