College football fans, especially those in Virginia, will be happy to hear that the coveted Black Diamond Trophy will soon be up for grabs again. In 2021 the Virginia Tech Hokies and the West Virginia Mountaineers will renew their rivalry with a home-and-homes series.

The Mountaineers will host the game in 2021. The Hokies will host the next matchup the very next year in 2022.

"During my three years as Athletic Director at West Virginia University, I have heard from legions of Mountaineer fans, particularly those in the Southern part of the state, who have expressed their strong sentiments to renew the football rivalry with Virginia Tech," West Virginia AD Oliver Luck said in a statement.

"This game is great for college football. We all know that the two schools have extraordinary fan bases, and both schools will be counting down the days until the Hokies and the Mountaineers meet again."

West Virginia leads the all-time series over Virginia Tech with a record of 28-22-1. The rivalry usually always produces a lot of back and forth excitement and a lot of close matchups. The two schools met in 33 consecutive football games from 1973-2005.

Outside of Virginia, this may not seem like a big rivalry, but if you have never seen these two teams play, be sure to mark your calendars for 2021. Regardless of how both schools are performing on the football field, this is a football game that will not lack entertainment. In-state rivalry games are always great games and Virginia Tech vs. West Virginia is certainly no different.

It's just too bad that these two teams aren't facing each other sooner than 2021. If the two teams played this upcoming season, it could possibly end the year as the most entertaining game in all of college football. As of right now, both teams are very evenly matched in talent and coaching.
